A metric drawing may call out 12 mm tube while an imported machine may use 1/2 inch tube. These values are close, but 1/2 inch equals 12.70 mm, so they should not be treated as the same clamp bore automatically.
Conversion is a checking tool. The purchasing dimension remains the exact outside diameter and tolerance of the tube being supported.
Typical use cases
- Use 1 inch = 25.4 mm for exact conversion
- Do not round 12.70 mm down to 12 mm for clamp selection
- Confirm whether an inch label is actual tube OD or nominal pipe size
- Keep mixed-unit BOMs explicit to prevent substitution errors
Common conversion checks
| Inch OD | Exact metric value | Selection warning |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 in | 6.35 mm | Not automatically a 6 mm clamp |
| 3/8 in | 9.525 mm | Check available bore and tube tolerance |
| 1/2 in | 12.70 mm | Do not substitute a 12 mm bore |
| 3/4 in | 19.05 mm | Do not assume it means DN20 pipe OD |
| 1 in | 25.40 mm | Confirm tube OD versus 1-inch nominal pipe |
These are mathematical conversions for actual OD. Nominal pipe systems can have different outside diameters.
1. Identify what the inch value describes
An inch callout may describe actual tube OD, nominal pipe size, hose inside diameter or a fitting thread. Ask for the tube standard or measure the supported surface before converting anything.
2. Avoid nearest-size substitution
A difference below one millimeter can still affect clamp closure, contact pressure and tube movement. Do not approve the nearest metric bore until the manufacturer confirms its permissible diameter range.
3. Control mixed-unit drawings and BOMs
Write both the original dimension and converted value, but mark which one controls. For example: tube OD 1/2 in (12.70 mm), inch dimension controls. This prevents a buyer from replacing it with a 12 mm item.
4. RFQ data for inch tube clamps
Send the original inch designation, exact converted OD, tube standard, tolerance, quantity, clamp series, material and mounting method. For an installed machine, include a caliper photo and the old clamp marking.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 1/2-inch tube the same as a 12 mm tube?
No. A true 1/2-inch OD is 12.70 mm. The difference can affect clamp fit, so keep the original dimension and verify the available clamp bore.
Does a 1-inch pipe have a 25.4 mm outside diameter?
Not necessarily. One inch equals 25.4 mm only when the value describes actual OD. Nominal pipe designations can use a different standardized outside diameter.
